The High Priests of Physics and The Occult Language of Mathematics

Bookmark and Share

There is nothing in the laws of the cosmos that says physicists are supposed to be happy. Steven Weinberg said something like that, voicing an opinion similar to Feynman's, who in effect said of quantum mechanics that you may not like it but that's the way it is.

A group of thinkers refuse to accept it as the way it is.  Concerned for their reputation, they do not like "sloppy thinkers who might well be called 'cranks,' who if given wide publicity would harm" their cause.

I will leave you to form your own opinions.

They are "devoted mainly to broad-ranging, fully open-minded criticism, at the most fundamental levels , of the often irrational and unrealistic doctrines of modern physics and cosmology; and to the ultimate replacement of these doctrines by much sounder ideas developed with full respect for evidence, logic, and objectivity. Such reforms have long been urgently needed; and yet there is no area of scholarship more stubbornly censorial, and more reluctant to reform itself."
They say that "the central theme that concerns nearly all members, both because of its highly honored position in current dogma and because its rather simple mathematics makes it comparatively easy to deal with, is special relativity (SR)," and "a very large majority. . . believe it is seriously flawed, and a clear majority believe it is totally invalid."

They hold that "reigning paradigms in physics and cosmology have for many decades been protected from open challenge by extreme intolerance, excluding debate about the most crucial problems from major journals and meetings."

Their members "hold a wide variety of different views," but they "agree unanimously"  "that something is drastically wrong in contemporary physics and cosmology, and that a new spirit of open-mindedness is desperately needed in order to correct this situation."

They believe that "physics has sunk into its current mess largely because of lack of" common sense.

~They believe "something is drastically wrong in contemporary physics and cosmology, and that a new spirit of open mindedness is desperately needed,"

~They are not paranoid but have no doubt that -- as a metaphor -- a priestly caste has taken over mainstream physics so that only the priests can understand the doctrine and dogma.

~Some of them are cranks in this view and in  their theories and some simply want an innovative refreshing approach to physics so to jolt it out of its stalemate.

~The priests do this by speaking a secret language--mathematics.

~They claim the natural world speaks a language we can all understand and they want to dialogue with it rather than a world mediated by "experts."

~They are devoted to "broad-ranging, fully open-minded criticism, at the most fundamental levels, of the often irrational and unrealistic doctrines of modern physics and cosmology; and to the ultimate replacement of these doctrines by much sounder ideas."

~They "do not reject science: they believe that it provides the right tools to reveal the majesty of our world. But they insist that the wonders of science be available to everyone."

~They believe that science increasingly makes us feel alienated by the current understanding of the cosmos.

~They are the Natural Philosophy Alliance, or NPA. Read on. Here is their website.
