Long before
Noam Chomsky and his scathing critiques of the media in works such as
Manufacturing Consent, there was
Edward Bernays, related to
Sigmund Freud. The difference between him and Chomsky is that Bernays thought of media as a convenient tool for the elite to control the masses. He wrote a book titled
Propaganda. Today it is still propaganda,
but more politically correct terms are used. Bernays lived in the days before euphemistic phrases such as
spin.
