Home______Insanity & Fuzzy Logic

Binary systems are found in the off/on, or 0/1 logic of artificial intelligence. Aristotle also reasoned this way. A school of reasoning called fuzzy logic regards the world differently. It might ask when ice becomes water, or where wax goes when it melts. It deals with shades of gray. David Hinckley tried to assassinate Ronald Reagen, and succeeded in wounding him. His defense was insanity. Fuzzy logic would not approach the question of his insanity as a yes/no proposition. As an example, it would have him .9 sane/.1 insane in youth, .5/.5 later, and .2/.8 when he shot Reagen. The criminal justice system only allows a binary approach to the issue.

As its concern, fuzzy logic takes statements like this by Einstein: "So far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain. And so far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality."
